WE PLAY IN TIME

My project ‘We Play In Time’ will begin at The Weavers Factory in Uppermill, Saddleworth on Saturday June 1st. I’ve been working with the Dobcross Silver Band over the past 12 months, exploring why and how traditions endure as a community evolves away from the circumstances that inspired them. On the ground floor will be photographs of the surrounding towns, taken at dawn, and pictures from the Whit Friday band day in 2018. On the first floor there will be […]

PICTURES IN NEED OF A SOUNDTRACK

My work ‘Pictures In Need Of A Soundtrack’ has now finished at The Creameries restaurant. The photographs proved popular and I very much enjoyed performing text I’d written, along with several musicians at the end of February. Thanks to everyone that came along during the months the pictures were on display. The next show on is by Bec Chow, and her photographs are of the producers who supply the kitchen.

NEW BAILEY DEVELOPMENT

I’ve been documenting the construction of 3 buildings in the New Bailey district of Salford for MUSE over the past few months. Riverside house is now nearing completion, whilst New Bailey 2 and 3 still have some way to go. I’m very much aware of “talking to the future’ when doing work such as this, acutely conscious of the detail within the pictures that might be of use to future social historians. It’s also fascinating talking to the people working […]

BLUE DOT WORKSHOP

I’m delighted to announce that I will be hosting a lowlight photography workshop at this year’s Blue Dot Festival ( 7/8/9th July ) at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire. There are 10 places on the course. On the Saturday afternoon there is an informal session on the techniques I use and how I approach seeing pictures. Then, on the Saturday night after the band on the main stage has finished there will be a Photo Walk, followed, on the Sunday afternoon, […]

ZARAGOSA, SPAIN

In 2008 Zaragoza hosted the Expo 2008. New buildings were constructed near the River Ebro. The city, hot and dusty dry in summer, sits isolated in the centre of Spain. It’s not a place you’d think of going to ski. Many of the grand office blocks now lie empty. I suppose you could say it’s all gone downhill.

HUMAN.DEVELOPMENT

Nearly a new year ago I began work on a new project, working with DeTrafford estates. This is the press release that was sent out at the time. “A unique artistic collaboration between DeTrafford Estates and fine art photographer Simon Buckley will chart Castlefield’s changing cityscape and provide new insights into the role of the developer in the transition of Manchester. Simon, a successful photographer for over 25 years, has recently won plaudits for his intimate twilight portraits of […]

BLUEDOT FESTIVAL

I went to the first ever Bluedot Festival at the weekend, staged at Jodrell Bank. I suspect that everyone there secretly wondered if aliens would finally contact with earth, whilst Jean Michel Jarre was beaming his light show onto the crowd in time to his pulsating electric music. There was an inevitable oddness to the event simply because everywhere you looked the giant Lovell telescope came into view, pointing skywards, gleaning whatever it can from the infinity it surveys. At […]

LENS CULTURE AWARD WINNERS 2015

LENS CULTURE The winners of Lens Culture Exposure awards have been announced and there is some extraordinary work chosen. I’m not always a fan of awards, and am often left wondering quite why the judges settled on the work they did. However, I feel that the images selected here have real merit, telling beautiful stories. To visit the Lens Culture website, and see the winners, click here Featured image by Alejandra López-Zaballa

FORGOTTEN PARISIAN MODERNIST ESTATES

A few websites have been featuring this set of photographs by Laurent Kronental. I think that they’re a wonderful exploration of a time when architects were creating vast estates that challenged the “old ways of living, as they saw it. Many of them failed in their ambitions to achieve the utopia that their vision drove them towards. What we’re doing with our evolving cities is something that fascinates me. Lake Garda

LAKE GARDA I’m currently re-visiting some work I did in 2014 for a travel client in Lake Garda, so that they can update their brochure. I swam in the lake at night, floating on my back, looking up at the stars.
